Why Mental Health Matters

We recognise that mental health challenges affect many people each year. In England, 1 in 4 people experience a mental health problem annually, it’s likely that some of our community members—whether at events, in clubs, or online—may be affected.

Mental health is just as important as physical health. While engaging in hobbies, sports, or social activities can support well-being, these should complement professional support, not replace it.

Our Goals

We have two main aims for our community:

  1. Understand Mental Health: Provide information to help you recognise signs of mental health struggles in yourself or others.
  2. Encourage Conversation: Promote asking simple, supportive questions like, “Are you okay?” to friends, family, or teammates.

If you ever feel your life is at immediate risk, call 999, go straight to A&E if possible, or contact your local crisis team.

Spotting the Signs

It can be challenging to notice when someone is struggling, and everyone expresses it differently. Some common signs include:

  • * Avoiding activities or missing sessions
  • * Reduced motivation
  • * Social withdrawal or isolation
  • * Extreme mood changes or heightened emotions
  • * Expressed feelings of sadness, anxiety, hopelessness, or being trapped
  • * Thoughts of self-harm or suicide
  • * Difficulty concentrating, making decisions, or thinking clearly
  • * Changes in sleep, appetite, or self-care
  • * Physical symptoms like unexplained aches, nausea, or headaches

How You Can Help

  • * Check in: Ask friends, colleagues, or teammates how they are.
  • * Listen without judgment: Sometimes simply being there is enough.
  • * Signpost to professional support: Encourage reaching out to a Mental Health First Aider,   the NHS, or other professional services.
